LIANE (voice and piano), ROGER CAREY (bass guitar), MARK FLETCHER (drums)
It's been 8 years since we were first introduced to and were captivated by Liane at Southport Arts Centre. Since then she has played at the club several times and one of those gigs resulted in our biggest ever club audience. Hardly surprising for a song writing, vocal and pianistic talent that has seen her move from ’90’s tours with Gerry Rafferty, Jerry Donahue and Long John Baldry to regular headline gigs at Ronnie Scott's, a tour of Brazil where she played to 50,000 audience and the Glastonbury Festival in 2007. Her recordings have sold well with her first CD Billy No Mates (’03), Standard Issue (’05), followed by Slow Down (’07). Her first DVD Liane Carroll Live (’08) included a set from The Brecon Jazz Festival screened on BBC4. As well as picking up 'Musician Of The Year' award from the PJA (’09) she has enjoyed great acclaim for her collaborations with Brian Kellock and Ian Shaw. In 2011 her trio went to the USA and played at Dizzy's and The Lincoln Centre in New York and the Rochester Jazz Festival. Her gig at the 2011 Titley Jazz Festival with Mark on drums sealed this one.

MICHAEL JANISCH bass, STEVE BROWN drums
This is Leon’s debut tour as a bandleader and he sure has hit the ground running.
The CD ‘Cookin’ in Brooklyn’ was recorded in New York this year, including US alto star Vincent Herring who started his career with the Lionel Hampton big band, followed by a nine year stint with Nat Adderley, during which he also managed to find time to play and record with Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Kenny Barron and many more. In all 15 CD’s as bandleader (his own band Earth’s Jazz Agents) and over 200 as a sideman. Mike Janisch makes his second visit to Southport in 3 weeks and our old friend Steve Brown completes this dynamic quartet led brilliantly by Leon’s hard driving piano style last heard at the club in February 2009.

to draw on and this concert will include favourites chosen by audiences as well as the new material. There will also be an opening set from gifted singersongwriter Kieron Goss.

The band has won a coveted BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted Fairport’s groundbreaking album Liege & Lief 'The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time'.

KIERAN GOSS – LIVE AND SOLO
“One Man, one guitar and a voice sent express mail from heaven.” Time Out Magazine
Long hailed as one of Ireland's leading songwriters and performers, Kieran Goss’s music has won him fans across the globe. But if his songs have made him a star, his live shows have made him a legend. Live on stage is where Kieran Goss really shines and following the huge success of his special guest appearances in the UK with Fairport Convention and Eddi Reader , Kieran returns to the UK to headline his own solo tour in April/May/June 2012.
“The sense of fun is tremendous, the playing first rate and the songs are sheer quality. The encores were genuine, but only because the man is too.” The Irish Times
“Kieran Goss is one of the most gifted performers around today. He has an amazing ability to reach out to his audience and connect with them in a very special way. This guy is the real deal, and that's what makes him the star he is.” Don Williams
"I've toured with Kieran and watched him perform many times. I've seen him win the hearts of everyone in the room, not just with his great songs and instinctive musicality, but with his warmth and humour. It's the performance of an artist at the top of his game, delivered with intelligence and integrity... Kieran Goss is one of Ireland's national treasures.” Rodney Crowell
This is a rare chance to see Kieran performing live and solo. Don’t miss it!

SUGGEST YOUR SOUTHPORT CULTURAL CENTRE NAMES
Fri 10 Feb 2012
With the Southport Cultural Centre more than half way through its redevelopment, we are considering a number of options for a ‘brand’ which can be used to promote the whole site. What do we mean by a ‘brand? For example: Marble Place is the ‘brand’ for a shopping arcade here in Southport but when you get there, the individual shops all retain their own name. The ‘brand’ is a description of the whole complex, a shorthand which makes promoting it easier.
There are a number of considerations we need to take into account.
- Given that the term ‘cultural centre’ is routinely used to describe local community facilities all over the North West, we need something different for a facility aspiring to be a regional centre of excellence?
- It can’t be called an Arts Centre when it now includes a library, museum, design centre, bistro and Tourist Information Centre?
- We’d like to retain the links with the past by keeping the individual facility names such as the Atkinson Gallery and the Cambridge Theatre.
- We’d like the brand to reflect Southport’s long tradition of support for the arts?
William Atkinson was probably Southport’s greatest individual charitable benefactor and contributed large sums of money to improving the health and wellbeing of local people.
- He met the full cost of building the Atkinson Free Library and the Atkinson Art Gallery.
- He paid for the construction of the (then) Cambridge Hall’s illuminated clock tower.
- He made significant donations to the Infirmary and the Convalescent Hospital.
- During their building, the Churches of St. Andrew’s, St Paul’s and Christ Church received large donations from him
- He established and supported the Provident Society for Fishermen
- He established a fund to help young people living on the street.
Yet, on his deathbed, he asked for all recognition of his generosity to be removed from the Council’s records. Officers would now like to consider redressing this by calling the whole complex The Atkinson in recognition of his contribution to the town’s continuing cultural life. However, if you have a different suggestion, the Southport Area Committee will be meeting on the 28th February, at 6.30 pm in Southport Town Hall to discuss this and you’re welcome to attend and put your suggestion directly to them.
